Vertical Ant Nest
2024
ceramic material for additive manufacturing
This modular ceramic 3D printing experimental project provides a vertically multi-functional and partitioned habitat for highly social small insects such as leafcutter ants and weaver ants. The module features a hollow, sturdy geometric form with a sloped vertical height. The modules vary in height, decreasing incrementally while increasing in horizontal length. Internally, a layered structure is formed through Z-shaped cavities and channels, simulating different functional zones within an ant nest, such as larvae incubation areas, nurseries, and food storage spaces.
The modules can be connected through slots to form an inclined vertical structure, offering ants a three-dimensional activity space that meets their needs for climbing, hiding, and foraging. This increases the nest’s capacity and extends the range of activity for the ant colony. The multi-layered structure allows air to flow freely across different levels, creating localized temperature gradients. Ants can utilize these gradients to select the most suitable living spaces for their survival. The modules can be stacked as needed to create more complex nests.
It calculates the weight and movement patterns of ants in a certain area, triggering module tilting and movement. This allows the ants’ natural behaviors to determine their living environment, achieving an autonomous architectural system.
The ceramic material used in the 3D printing process has a porosity of 10-15%, offering excellent temperature regulation and humidity control. This ensures a balance between breathability and thermal conductivity, allowing for air circulation within the nest while preventing excessive moisture buildup. The extruded ceramic forms layered textures resembling natural materials like bark and rock, providing good traction for ants to climb. The ceramic is also biodegradable, gradually decomposing when exposed to natural environments over time.
